Description

Apache Tomcat 5.5.11 through 5.5.25 and 6.0.0 through 6.0.15, when the native APR connector is used, does not properly handle an empty request to the SSL port, which allows remote attackers to trigger handling of "a duplicate copy of one of the recent requests," as demonstrated by using netcat to send the empty request.

Detection & mitigation playbook

Open-source dependency
  1. Detect

Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for org.apache.tomcat:tomcat, including transitive dependencies — a direct dependency you never call can still pull in a vulnerable version.

  2. Remediation status

No patched version of org.apache.tomcat:tomcat has shipped for CVE-2007-6286 yet. Where your build allows, override or pin the dependency away from the vulnerable range, and apply any maintainer-recommended mitigation.

  3. Mitigate without a patch

If you can't upgrade right away: gate or disable the affected feature, validate untrusted input at the boundary, and avoid passing attacker-controlled data into the vulnerable path. O3's runtime protection blocks exploitation in production as an interim safeguard until the upgrade lands.

  4. How O3 protects you

O3 Security's impact-aware SCA analyses which vulnerable code paths your application actually calls, so a match like CVE-2007-6286 can be triaged on real exposure rather than presence alone.

Tailored to CVE-2007-6286. Runtime protection reduces exposure until a permanent patch is applied and verified — it complements patching, it doesn't replace it.
