CVE-2026-92959 — Patriksimek
CVE-2026-92959 is a CWE-693 vulnerability. A fix is available — see the affected versions and patch details below.
vm2 before 3.11.8 allowAsync Bypass via Promise Thenable
Description
vm2 before 3.11.8 does not fully enforce the allowAsync: false option in VM and NodeVM. While localPromise.prototype.then is replaced with a handler that throws 'Async not available', the sandbox's Promise static methods (Promise.resolve, Promise.all, Promise.race, Promise.any, and Promise.allSettled) still assimilate attacker-supplied thenables: native promise resolution performs PromiseResolveThenableJob and invokes the sandboxed code's then method in a microtask without passing through the patched then, so the async restriction is never applied. As a result, sandboxed script can schedule work that runs after VM.run() or NodeVM.run() has returned and outside the configured timeout, continuing to execute after the host believes execution is complete.
Detection & mitigation playbook
VulnerabilityDetect
Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for the affected component, including transitive dependencies — a direct dependency you never call can still pull in a vulnerable version.
Fix
No patched version of the affected component has shipped for CVE-2026-92959 yet. Where your build allows, override or pin the dependency away from the vulnerable range, and apply any maintainer-recommended mitigation.
Workarounds
If you can't upgrade right away: gate or disable the affected feature, validate untrusted input at the boundary, and avoid passing attacker-controlled data into the vulnerable path. O3's runtime protection blocks exploitation in production as an interim safeguard until the upgrade lands.
How O3 protects you
O3 Security's impact-aware SCA analyses which vulnerable code paths your application actually calls, so a match like CVE-2026-92959 can be triaged on real exposure rather than presence alone.
Tailored to CVE-2026-92959. Runtime protection reduces exposure until a permanent patch is applied and verified — it complements patching, it doesn't replace it.
