CVE-2020-27223

MEDIUMFix: jetty/jetty.project@10e5317

CVE-2020-27223 is a medium-severity (CVSS 5.3) CWE-407 vulnerability in org.eclipse.jetty:jetty-server. 2 public exploit references exist, so weaponization risk is real. O3 Security confirms whether CVE-2020-27223 is actually reachable in your code before you act, and blocks exploitation at runtime until you patch.

Description

In Eclipse Jetty 9.4.6.v20170531 to 9.4.36.v20210114 (inclusive), 10.0.0, and 11.0.0 when Jetty handles a request containing multiple Accept headers with a large number of “quality” (i.e. q) parameters, the server may enter a denial of service (DoS) state due to high CPU usage processing those quality values, resulting in minutes of CPU time exhausted processing those quality values.

Detection & mitigation playbook

Open-source dependency
  1. Detect

Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for org.eclipse.jetty:jetty-server. O3's reachability analysis confirms whether the vulnerable code path is actually invoked in your application, so you act on real exposure instead of every transitive match.

  2. Fix

Update org.eclipse.jetty:jetty-server to 9.4.37 or later, then make sure no transitive (indirect) dependency still pins the vulnerable range — O3 confirms CVE-2020-27223 is resolved across your whole dependency graph.

  3. Workarounds

If you can't upgrade right away: gate or disable the affected feature, validate untrusted input at the boundary, and avoid passing attacker-controlled data into the vulnerable path. O3's runtime protection blocks exploitation in production as an interim safeguard until the upgrade lands.

  4. How O3 protects you

O3 pinpoints whether CVE-2020-27223 is reachable in your code and exactly where to fix it, then blocks exploitation in production at runtime until the patched version is deployed.

Tailored to CVE-2020-27223. Runtime protection reduces exposure until a permanent patch is applied and verified — it complements patching, it doesn't replace it.

Fixing This On Your OS

If you run this on a Linux distribution, patch through your package manager against the distro's own security advisory below — it tracks the exact backported fix for your release, which can ship on a different timeline (and sometimes a different severity) than the upstream project.

Red HatModerate

In OpenShift Container Platform (OCP), the Hive/Presto/Hadoop components that comprise the OCP Metering stack, ship the vulnerable version of jetty. Since the release of OCP 4.6, the Metering product has been deprecated [1], hence the affected components are marked as wontfix. This may be fixed in the future. [1]…
