GHSA-v768-w7m9-2vmm

HIGHFix: tensorflow/tensorflow@578e634

GHSA-v768-w7m9-2vmm is a high-severity (CVSS 7.8) CWE-824 vulnerability in tensorflow. O3 Security confirms whether GHSA-v768-w7m9-2vmm is actually reachable in your code before you act, and blocks exploitation at runtime until you patch.

Description

Impact

An attacker can cause undefined behavior via binding a reference to null pointer in tf.raw_ops.SparseFillEmptyRows:

import tensorflow as tf

tf.compat.v1.disable_v2_behavior()
tf.raw_ops.SparseFillEmptyRows(
  indices = tf.constant([], shape=[0, 0], dtype=tf.int64),
  values = tf.constant([], shape=[0], dtype=tf.int64),
  dense_shape = tf.constant([], shape=[0], dtype=tf.int64),
  default_value = 0)

The shape inference implementation does not validate that the input arguments are not empty tensors.

Patches

We have patched the issue in GitHub commit 578e634b4f1c1c684d4b4294f9e5281b2133b3ed.

The fix will be included in TensorFlow 2.6.0. We will also cherrypick this commit on TensorFlow 2.5.1, TensorFlow 2.4.3, and TensorFlow 2.3.4, as these are also affected and still in supported range.

Detection & mitigation playbook

Open-source dependency
  1. Detect

    Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for tensorflow. O3's reachability analysis confirms whether the vulnerable code path is actually invoked in your application, so you act on real exposure instead of every transitive match.

  2. Fix

    Update tensorflow to 2.3.4 or later, then make sure no transitive (indirect) dependency still pins the vulnerable range — O3 confirms GHSA-v768-w7m9-2vmm is resolved across your whole dependency graph.

  3. Workarounds

    If you can't upgrade right away: gate or disable the affected feature, validate untrusted input at the boundary, and avoid passing attacker-controlled data into the vulnerable path. O3's runtime protection blocks exploitation in production as an interim safeguard until the upgrade lands.

  4. How O3 protects you

    O3 pinpoints whether GHSA-v768-w7m9-2vmm is reachable in your code and exactly where to fix it, then blocks exploitation in production at runtime until the patched version is deployed.

Tailored to GHSA-v768-w7m9-2vmm. Runtime protection reduces exposure until a permanent patch is applied and verified — it complements patching, it doesn't replace it.

Is GHSA-v768-w7m9-2vmm in your dependencies?

O3 detects GHSA-v768-w7m9-2vmm across PyPI dependencies and uses function-level reachability to confirm whether the vulnerable code path is actually reachable — not just present. No false positives.
