Description

Description

Following Admin APIs in Ory Hydra are vulnerable to SQL injection due to flaws in its pagination implementation:

  • listOAuth2Clients
  • listOAuth2ConsentSessions
  • listTrustedOAuth2JwtGrantIssuers

Pagination tokens are encrypted using the secret configured in secrets.pagination. If this value is not set, Hydra falls back to using secrets.system. An attacker who knows this secret can craft their own tokens, including malicious tokens that lead to SQL injection.

Preconditions

This issue can be exploited when the following conditions are met:

  • One or more admin APIs listed above are directly or indirectly accessible to the attacker
  • The attacker can pass a raw pagination token to the affected API
  • The configuration value secrets.pagination is set and known to the attacker, or secrets.pagination is not set and secrets.system is known to the attacker

Impact

An attacker can execute arbitrary SQL queries through forged pagination tokens.

Mitigation

As a first line of defense, immediately configure a custom value for secrets.pagination by generating a cryptographically secure random secret, for example:

openssl rand -base64 32

Next, upgrade Hydra to the fixed version as soon as possible.

Detection & mitigation playbook

Open-source dependency
  1. Detect

Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for github.com/ory/hydra. O3's reachability analysis confirms whether the vulnerable code path is actually invoked in your application, so you act on real exposure instead of every transitive match.

  2. Fix

No patched version of github.com/ory/hydra has shipped for GHSA-r9w3-57w2-gch2 yet. Where your build allows, override or pin the dependency away from the vulnerable range, and apply any maintainer-recommended mitigation.

  3. Workarounds

If you can't upgrade right away: gate or disable the affected feature, validate untrusted input at the boundary, and avoid passing attacker-controlled data into the vulnerable path. O3's runtime protection blocks exploitation in production as an interim safeguard until the upgrade lands.

  4. How O3 protects you

O3 pinpoints whether GHSA-r9w3-57w2-gch2 is reachable in your code and exactly where to fix it, then blocks exploitation in production at runtime until the patched version is deployed.

Tailored to GHSA-r9w3-57w2-gch2. Runtime protection reduces exposure until a permanent patch is applied and verified — it complements patching, it doesn't replace it.
