Description
Impact
When TechDocs is configured to build documentation locally or in a container, a user with write access to a registered repository can include configuration values in mkdocs.yml that cause arbitrary code execution during the documentation build process.
Patches
Patched in @backstage/plugin-techdocs-node version 1.15.4
Workarounds
- Configure TechDocs with
techdocs.generator.runIn: 'docker'instead of'local'to provide container isolation, though this does not fully mitigate the risk. - Restrict write access to repositories registered in the Backstage catalog to trusted users.

Detection & mitigation playbook
Open-source dependencyDetect
Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for @backstage/plugin-techdocs-node, including transitive dependencies — a direct dependency you never call can still pull in a vulnerable version.
Fix
Update @backstage/plugin-techdocs-node to 1.15.4 or later, then make sure no transitive (indirect) dependency still pins the vulnerable range — O3 confirms GHSA-8w7q-29mw-gf5c is resolved across your whole dependency graph.
Workarounds
Stop passing untrusted input into the interpreter or shell: call the affected binary with an argument array rather than a composed command string, reject anything outside a strict allowlist of expected values, and run the component under an account that cannot reach beyond the work it legitimately does.
