Description
OpenImageIO is a toolset for reading, writing, and manipulating image files of any image file format relevant to VFX / animation. Prior to 3.0.21.0, 3.1.16.0, and 3.2.0.3-beta1, A valid tiled openexr image whose width is not a multiple of its tile width can trigger an overflow when a caller reads a partial edge-tile rectangle. openexrinput::read_native_tiles() copies each row into the caller buffer using the padded whole-tile scanline_stride rather than user_scanline_bytes for the requested rectangle, resulting in a heap out-of-bounds write and memory corruption. The affected implementation is identified by src/openexr.imageio/exrinput.cpp, OpenEXRInput::read_native_tiles(), partial edge tile, user_scanline_bytes, and scanline_stride, which define the relevant source path, functions, state, and trigger. This issue is fixed in versions 3.0.21.0, 3.1.16.0, and 3.2.0.3-beta1.
Detection & mitigation playbook
VulnerabilityDetect
Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for the affected component, including transitive dependencies — a direct dependency you never call can still pull in a vulnerable version.
Remediation status
No patched version of the affected component has shipped for CVE-2026-63422 yet. Where your build allows, override or pin the dependency away from the vulnerable range, and apply any maintainer-recommended mitigation.
Mitigate without a patch
If you can't upgrade right away: gate or disable the affected feature, validate untrusted input at the boundary, and avoid passing attacker-controlled data into the vulnerable path. O3's runtime protection blocks exploitation in production as an interim safeguard until the upgrade lands.
How O3 protects you
O3 Security's impact-aware SCA analyses which vulnerable code paths your application actually calls, so a match like CVE-2026-63422 can be triaged on real exposure rather than presence alone.
Tailored to CVE-2026-63422. Runtime protection reduces exposure until a permanent patch is applied and verified — it complements patching, it doesn't replace it.
