CVE-2026-33551

LOW

CVE-2026-33551 is a low-severity (CVSS 3.5) CWE-863 vulnerability in keystone. O3 Security confirms whether CVE-2026-33551 is actually reachable in your code before you act, and blocks exploitation at runtime until you patch.

Description

An issue was discovered in OpenStack Keystone 14 through 26 before 26.1.1, 27.0.0, 28.0.0, and 29.0.0. Restricted application credentials can create EC2 credentials. By using a restricted application credential to call the EC2 credential creation API, an authenticated user with only a reader role may obtain an EC2/S3 credential that carries the full set of the parent user's S3 permissions, effectively bypassing the role restrictions imposed on the application credential. Only deployments that use restricted application credentials in combination with the EC2/S3 compatibility API (swift3 / s3api) are affected.

Detection & mitigation playbook

Open-source dependency
  1. Detect

Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for keystone. O3's reachability analysis confirms whether the vulnerable code path is actually invoked in your application, so you act on real exposure instead of every transitive match.

  2. Fix

Update keystone to 26.1.1 or later, then make sure no transitive (indirect) dependency still pins the vulnerable range — O3 confirms CVE-2026-33551 is resolved across your whole dependency graph.

  3. Workarounds

If you can't upgrade right away: gate or disable the affected feature, validate untrusted input at the boundary, and avoid passing attacker-controlled data into the vulnerable path. O3's runtime protection blocks exploitation in production as an interim safeguard until the upgrade lands.

  4. How O3 protects you

O3 pinpoints whether CVE-2026-33551 is reachable in your code and exactly where to fix it, then blocks exploitation in production at runtime until the patched version is deployed.

Tailored to CVE-2026-33551. Runtime protection reduces exposure until a permanent patch is applied and verified — it complements patching, it doesn't replace it.
