Description
When running Apache Tomcat versions 9.0.0.M1 to 9.0.0, 8.5.0 to 8.5.22, 8.0.0.RC1 to 8.0.46 and 7.0.0 to 7.0.81 with HTTP PUTs enabled (e.g. via setting the readonly initialisation parameter of the Default servlet to false) it was possible to upload a JSP file to the server via a specially crafted request. This JSP could then be requested and any code it contained would be executed by the server.

Detection & mitigation playbook
Open-source dependencyDetect
Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for org.apache.tomcat:tomcat-catalina, including transitive dependencies — a direct dependency you never call can still pull in a vulnerable version.
Fix
Update org.apache.tomcat:tomcat-catalina to 9.0.1 or later, then make sure no transitive (indirect) dependency still pins the vulnerable range — O3 confirms GHSA-xjgh-84hx-56c5 is resolved across your whole dependency graph.
Workarounds
Treat uploaded files as untrusted until proven otherwise: validate the actual content type rather than the supplied extension, store uploads outside the web root on a volume mounted without execute permission, and rename them to server-generated identifiers so an attacker cannot choose the path a request will later resolve.
How to detect GHSA-xjgh-84hx-56c5
A community-maintained Nuclei template exists for this CVE. You can scan for it directly:
nuclei -id ghsa-xjgh-84hx-56c5 -u https://target- Template

Fixing This On Your OS
If you run this on a Linux distribution, patch through your package manager against the distro's own security advisory below — it tracks the exact backported fix for your release, which can ship on a different timeline (and sometimes a different severity) than the upstream project.
This flaw affects Tomcat on Red Hat Enterprise Linux only when a specific context is configured with readonly=false. The default configuration has a readonly context, so it is not affected.
Ensure that readonly is set to true (the default) for the DefaultServlet, WebDAV servlet or application context. Block HTTP methods that permit resource modification for untrusted users.Source: Red Hat security advisory for GHSA-xjgh-84hx-56c5 (CC BY 4.0)
