Description

The package github.com/gomarkdown/markdown is a Go library for parsing Markdown text and rendering as HTML. Prior to pseudoversion v0.0.0-20240729232818-a2a9c4f, which corresponds with commit a2a9c4f76ef5a5c32108e36f7c47f8d310322252, there was a logical problem in the paragraph function of the parser/block.go file, which allowed a remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition by providing a tailor-made input that caused an infinite loop, causing the program to hang and consume resources indefinitely. Submit a2a9c4f76ef5a5c32108e36f7c47f8d310322252 contains fixes to this problem.

Detection & mitigation playbook

Open-source dependency
  1. Detect

Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for github.com/gomarkdown/markdown. O3's reachability analysis confirms whether the vulnerable code path is actually invoked in your application, so you act on real exposure instead of every transitive match.

  2. Fix

Update github.com/gomarkdown/markdown to 0.0.0-20240729212818-a2a9c4f76ef5 or later, then make sure no transitive (indirect) dependency still pins the vulnerable range — O3 confirms GHSA-xhr3-wf7j-h255 is resolved across your whole dependency graph.

  3. Workarounds

If you can't upgrade right away: gate or disable the affected feature, validate untrusted input at the boundary, and avoid passing attacker-controlled data into the vulnerable path. O3's runtime protection blocks exploitation in production as an interim safeguard until the upgrade lands.

  4. How O3 protects you

O3 pinpoints whether GHSA-xhr3-wf7j-h255 is reachable in your code and exactly where to fix it, then blocks exploitation in production at runtime until the patched version is deployed.

Tailored to GHSA-xhr3-wf7j-h255. Runtime protection reduces exposure until a permanent patch is applied and verified — it complements patching, it doesn't replace it.
