Description

Problem

Backend users with file write permissions were able to upload form definition files with mixed-case extensions (e.g., .FORM.YAML) to bypass the Form Framework's upload restriction. Maliciously crafted form definition files can be used to execute arbitrary SQL statements, allowing attackers to escalate privileges by creating administrative backend user accounts.

Solution

Update to TYPO3 versions 10.4.57 ELTS, 11.5.51 ELTS, 12.4.46 ELTS, 13.4.31 LTS, 14.3.3 LTS that fix the problem described.

Detection & mitigation playbook

Open-source dependency
  1. Detect

Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for typo3/cms-core, including transitive dependencies — a direct dependency you never call can still pull in a vulnerable version.

  2. Fix

Update typo3/cms-core to 10.4.57 or later, then make sure no transitive (indirect) dependency still pins the vulnerable range — O3 confirms GHSA-hwvq-2w67-rvxp is resolved across your whole dependency graph.

  3. Workarounds

Put an independent control in front of the weakness: restrict the affected endpoint or interface to trusted networks, require an additional authentication factor or proxy-level check, and invalidate existing sessions and credentials in case the flaw has already been used.
