Description

pypdf is a free and open-source pure-python PDF library. Prior to 6.21.4, pypdf can consume excessive memory while parsing a crafted PDF page tree containing many shared resources. Page-tree flattening copies page dictionary and inherited resource entries without a document-wide entry budget, allowing the crafted resource structure to cause disproportionate allocations. This issue is fixed in version 6.21.4.

Detection & mitigation playbook

Open-source dependency
  1. Detect

Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for pypdf, including transitive dependencies — a direct dependency you never call can still pull in a vulnerable version.

  2. Fix

Update pypdf to 6.21.4 or later, then make sure no transitive (indirect) dependency still pins the vulnerable range — O3 confirms GHSA-cggf-277g-3q54 is resolved across your whole dependency graph.

  3. Workarounds

Cap what an attacker can consume: apply request size, rate and timeout limits in front of the affected component, and run it with memory and CPU limits so exhaustion degrades one worker rather than the whole service.

Frequently Asked Questions

### Impact An attacker who uses this vulnerability can craft a PDF which leads to large memory usage. This requires parsing the page tree with many shared resources. ### Patches This has been fixed in [pypdf==6.21.4](https://github.com/py-pdf/pypdf/releases/tag/6.21.4). ### Workarounds If you cannot upgrade yet, consider applying the changes from PR [#4290](https://github.com/py-pdf/pypdf/pull/4290).
