Exploitation Status

No confirmed exploitation observed yet

  • A successful exploit gives an attacker total control of the affected component, not partial access.
  • CISA’s own triage has not observed active exploitation or public proof-of-concept code for this CVE as of its last assessment.

EPSS (Exploit Prediction Scoring System) is a daily probability model maintained by FIRST.org. It estimates the likelihood a CVE will be exploited in production environments within the next 30 days, derived from real-world threat intelligence signals.

How urgent is this, really

GHSA-6jp5-grgh-jw42 plotted by exploitation likelihood (EPSS) against impact (CVSS). The shaded corner — EPSS 50%+ and CVSS 7.0+ — is where this CVE doesn't sit, though severity or exploitability alone can still warrant action.

Where this sits among everything scored

Of 379,145 CVEs with a current EPSS score, this one falls in the < 10% band (highlighted). Real counts from FIRST.org, not a sample — log-scaled since the landscape is heavily right-skewed.

Description

As noted in the “VTPM.md” file in the eve documentation, “VTPM is a server listening on port 8877 in EVE, exposing limited functionality of the TPM to the clients. VTPM allows clients to execute tpm2-tools binaries from a list of hardcoded options” The communication with this server is done using protobuf, and the data is comprised of 2 parts:

  1. Header

  2. Data

When a connection is made, the server is waiting for 4 bytes of data, which will be the header, and these 4 bytes would be parsed as uint32 size of the actual data to come.

Then, in the function “handleRequest” this size is then used in order to allocate a payload on the stack for the incoming data.

As this payload is allocated on the stack, this will allow overflowing the stack size allocated for the relevant process with freely controlled data.

  • An attacker can crash the system.
  • An attacker can gain control over the system, specifically on the “vtpm_server” process which has very high privileges.

Detection & mitigation playbook

Open-source dependency
  1. Detect

Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for github.com/lf-edge/eve, including transitive dependencies — a direct dependency you never call can still pull in a vulnerable version.

  2. Fix

Update github.com/lf-edge/eve to 0.0.0-20230519072751-977f42b07fa9 or later, then make sure no transitive (indirect) dependency still pins the vulnerable range — O3 confirms GHSA-6jp5-grgh-jw42 is resolved across your whole dependency graph.

  3. Workarounds

Cap what an attacker can consume: apply request size, rate and timeout limits in front of the affected component, and run it with memory and CPU limits so exhaustion degrades one worker rather than the whole service.

  4. How O3 protects you

O3 Security's impact-aware SCA analyses which vulnerable code paths your application actually calls, so a match like GHSA-6jp5-grgh-jw42 can be triaged on real exposure rather than presence alone.

Tailored to GHSA-6jp5-grgh-jw42. Runtime protection reduces exposure until a permanent patch is applied and verified — it complements patching, it doesn't replace it.

Frequently Asked Questions

### Impact VTPM server listens on port 8877, exposing limited TPM functionality. The server reads 4 bytes as a uint32 size header, then allocates that amount on the stack for incoming data. This allows Denial of Service attacks against the vTPM service. An workload (a container or VM) running on EVE-OS can use this to generate a DOS against the vTPM service. ### Patches Fixed in 9.4.3-lts and 10.1.0 ### Workarounds None

Is GHSA-6jp5-grgh-jw42 in your dependencies?

O3 Security finds GHSA-6jp5-grgh-jw42 across Go dependencies, including transitive ones, and its impact-aware SCA ranks findings by whether your code actually calls the vulnerable path.
