Description

Impact

An attacker who uses this vulnerability can craft a PDF which leads to arbitrary image parsers being called. This requires loading an image which claims to use the /DCTDecode filter (JPEG data).

Users which do not have the optional Pillow dependency installed in their environment are not affected.

Patches

This has been fixed in pypdf==6.21.1.

Workarounds

If you cannot upgrade yet, consider applying the changes from PR #4222.

Detection & mitigation playbook

Open-source dependency
  1. Detect

Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for pypdf, including transitive dependencies — a direct dependency you never call can still pull in a vulnerable version.

  2. Fix

Update pypdf to 6.21.1 or later, then make sure no transitive (indirect) dependency still pins the vulnerable range — O3 confirms GHSA-5hx5-vpf9-5wcv is resolved across your whole dependency graph.

  3. Workarounds

If you can't upgrade right away: gate or disable the affected feature, validate untrusted input at the boundary, and avoid passing attacker-controlled data into the vulnerable path. O3's runtime protection blocks exploitation in production as an interim safeguard until the upgrade lands.

Fixing This On Your OS

If you run this on a Linux distribution, patch through your package manager against the distro's own security advisory below — it tracks the exact backported fix for your release, which can ship on a different timeline (and sometimes a different severity) than the upstream project.

Red HatLow

This vulnerability is rated Low impact because exploitation is limited to a localized denial of service during document parsing, requiring an attacker to supply a specially crafted file to an environment with the optional Pillow image library active. In Red Hat environments such as OpenShift AI, Lightspeed, and Quay,…

Workaround published by Red Hat
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
