CVE-2026-56817

Fix: netty/netty@5b68c61

CVE-2026-56817 is a XML External Entity (XXE) vulnerability in io.netty:netty-codec-xml. O3 Security confirms whether CVE-2026-56817 is actually reachable in your code before you act, and blocks exploitation at runtime until you patch.

Description

Netty is a network application framework for development of protocol servers and clients. In versions 4.2.0.Final through 4.2.15.Final and 4.1.0.Final through 4.1.135.Final, any caller that can deliver bytes to a Netty channel pipeline containing XmlDecoder can send XML with a DOCTYPE declaration to an AsyncXMLInputFactory instantiated with no security configuration, leaving DTD and entity handling active depending on Aalto XML async parser behavior and creating conditional XML external entity risk. This issue is fixed in versions 4.1.136.Final and 4.2.16.Final.

Detection & mitigation playbook

Open-source dependency
  1. Detect

Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for io.netty:netty-codec-xml. O3's reachability analysis confirms whether the vulnerable code path is actually invoked in your application, so you act on real exposure instead of every transitive match.

  2. Fix

Update io.netty:netty-codec-xml to 4.2.16.Final or later, then make sure no transitive (indirect) dependency still pins the vulnerable range — O3 confirms CVE-2026-56817 is resolved across your whole dependency graph.

  3. Workarounds

If you can't upgrade right away: gate or disable the affected feature, validate untrusted input at the boundary, and avoid passing attacker-controlled data into the vulnerable path. O3's runtime protection blocks exploitation in production as an interim safeguard until the upgrade lands.

  4. How O3 protects you

O3 pinpoints whether CVE-2026-56817 is reachable in your code and exactly where to fix it, then blocks exploitation in production at runtime until the patched version is deployed.

Tailored to CVE-2026-56817. Runtime protection reduces exposure until a permanent patch is applied and verified — it complements patching, it doesn't replace it.

Fixing This On Your OS

If you run this on a Linux distribution, patch through your package manager against the distro's own security advisory below — it tracks the exact backported fix for your release, which can ship on a different timeline (and sometimes a different severity) than the upstream project.

Red HatImportant

This Important flaw in Netty's `XmlDecoder` component allows for XML External Entity (XXE) injection. When a Netty channel pipeline processes XML data with a `DOCTYPE` declaration via an `AsyncXMLInputFactory` that lacks proper security configuration, a remote attacker could potentially disclose sensitive information.…
