CVE-2026-55649 is a medium-severity (CVSS 6.3) Cross-site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in geonode. A fix is available for geonode — see the affected versions and patch details below.
GeoNode has Stored XSS in Documents metadata abstract field
Real-World Exposure
geonodeReal-time download stats are indexed for npm and PyPI packages. This vulnerability affects PyPI packages — download data is not available via public APIs for these ecosystems.
Description
GeoNode is a geospatial content management system, a platform for the management and publication of geospatial data. Prior to 5.0.3, document abstract metadata is stored without sanitization, allowing a low-privileged remote user to persist arbitrary HTML and JavaScript that executes in another user's browser when the document page is visited. This issue is fixed in version 5.0.3.
Affected Packages
| Ecosystem | Package | Vulnerable range | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🐍PyPI | geonode | all versions | 5.0.3pip install --upgrade 'geonode==5.0.3' |
Detection & mitigation playbook
Open-source dependencyDetect
Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for geonode, including transitive dependencies — a direct dependency you never call can still pull in a vulnerable version.
Fix
Update geonode to 5.0.3 or later, then make sure no transitive (indirect) dependency still pins the vulnerable range — O3 confirms CVE-2026-55649 is resolved across your whole dependency graph.
Workarounds
Escape or sanitise the affected output on the server side rather than relying on client-side filtering, and add a Content-Security-Policy that blocks inline script execution so injected markup cannot run even if it reaches the page.
