Exploitation Status
Proof-of-concept exploit code exists
- CISA’s SSVC triage found public proof-of-concept exploit code for this CVE, though no confirmed active exploitation.
- CISA assesses this as automatable — exploitation doesn’t require manual, per-target effort, which raises the odds of mass scanning and opportunistic attacks.

Description
FreeRDP before 3.32.2 contains a denial of service vulnerability in the NLA-enabled shadow server when a CredSSP TSRequest omits negoTokens. Unauthenticated attackers can send a crafted seven-byte TSRequest containing only the version field to trigger a fatal WINPR_ASSERT and abort the server process.

VulnerabilityDetect
Identify every host running the affected component and compare the installed build against the fixed version below — for source-built or distro-packaged software the version string, not a lockfile, is the source of truth (`dpkg -l`, `rpm -q`, or the binary's own `--version`).
Remediation status
The records we use list no fixed release for CVE-2026-121960. Check the upstream advisory for a patched version, and apply the exposure-reduction steps below in the meantime.
Mitigate without a patch
Cap what an attacker can consume: apply request size, rate and timeout limits in front of the affected component, and run it with memory and CPU limits so exhaustion degrades one worker rather than the whole service.
Fixing This On Your OS
If you run this on a Linux distribution, patch through your package manager against the distro's own security advisory below — it tracks the exact backported fix for your release, which can ship on a different timeline (and sometimes a different severity) than the upstream project.
This vulnerability is rated as having an Important severity impact because an unauthenticated remote attacker can trigger an immediate server process termination without credentials or user interaction, resulting in a complete denial of service for active remote sessions. Within Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments,…
Restrict network exposure of the FreeRDP shadow server to trusted hosts or terminate the shadow server service if remote desktop sharing is not required. 1. If the shadow server is running and not needed, terminate the `freerdp-shadow-cli` process. 2. If the service must be accessible, restrict incoming connections to authorized management networks using firewalld: firewall-cmd --permanent --zone=public --remove-port=3389/tcp firewall-cmd --permanent --zone=trusted --add-source=<TRUSTED_IP_OR_CIDR> firewall-cmd --reload Caveat: Restricting network access prevents unauthenticated remote clients from connecting to the shadow server session. Replace the port number if a non-default port was…Source: Red Hat security advisory for CVE-2026-121960 (CC BY 4.0)
