Description
Mattermost versions 9.9.x <= 9.9.1, 9.5.x <= 9.5.7, 9.10.x <= 9.10.0 and 9.8.x <= 9.8.2 fail to ensure that remote/synthetic users cannot create sessions or reset passwords, which allows the munged email addresses, created by shared channels, to be used to receive email notifications and to reset passwords, when they are valid, functional emails.

Open-source dependencyDetect
Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for github.com/mattermost/mattermost/server/v8, including transitive dependencies — a direct dependency you never call can still pull in a vulnerable version.
Fix
Update github.com/mattermost/mattermost/server/v8 to 9.9.2 or later, then make sure no transitive (indirect) dependency still pins the vulnerable range — O3 confirms CVE-2024-39836 is resolved across your whole dependency graph.
Workarounds
If you can't upgrade right away: gate or disable the affected feature, validate untrusted input at the boundary, and avoid passing attacker-controlled data into the vulnerable path. O3's runtime protection blocks exploitation in production as an interim safeguard until the upgrade lands.
