Description

An information leak vulnerability exists in Gerrit versions prior to 2.14.22, 2.15.21, 2.16.25, 3.0.15, 3.1.10, 3.2.5 where an overoptimization with the FilteredRepository wrapper skips the verification of access on All-Users repositories, allowing an attacker to get read access to all users' personal information associated with their accounts.

Detection & mitigation playbook

Open-source dependency
  1. Detect

Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for com.google.gerrit:gerrit-plugin-api, including transitive dependencies — a direct dependency you never call can still pull in a vulnerable version.

  2. Fix

Update com.google.gerrit:gerrit-plugin-api to 2.14.22 or later, then make sure no transitive (indirect) dependency still pins the vulnerable range — O3 confirms CVE-2020-8920 is resolved across your whole dependency graph.

  3. Workarounds

If you can't upgrade right away: gate or disable the affected feature, validate untrusted input at the boundary, and avoid passing attacker-controlled data into the vulnerable path. O3's runtime protection blocks exploitation in production as an interim safeguard until the upgrade lands.
