Description

A Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) was discovered in 'SocialNetwork v1.2.1'. The vulnerability exists due to insufficient filtration of user-supplied data (mail) passed to the 'SocialNetwork-andrea/app/template/pw_forgot.php' URL. An attacker could execute arbitrary HTML and script code in a browser in the context of the vulnerable website. A patch for the vulnerability is available at https://github.com/andreas83/SocialNetwork/commit/1b0799d08fda2f3099beaae1234b8b468deb8db1

Detection & mitigation playbook

Open-source dependency
  1. Detect

Scan your dependency tree (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, requirements.txt, go.sum, etc.) for movingbytes/social-network, including transitive dependencies — a direct dependency you never call can still pull in a vulnerable version.

  2. Remediation status

The records we use list no patched version of movingbytes/social-network for CVE-2017-7390. Check the maintainer's advisory, and where your build allows, override or pin the dependency away from the vulnerable range.

  3. Mitigate without a patch

Escape or sanitise the affected output on the server side rather than relying on client-side filtering, and add a Content-Security-Policy that blocks inline script execution so injected markup cannot run even if it reaches the page.
