MAL-2026-18436
Immediate action
Remove the package, then rotate any secrets the build/runtime could reach.
gem uninstall macs-shoaibs-pro17

What this malware does

The gem declares ext/mkrf_conf.rb as a native extension, which RubyGems auto-executes during gem install. The script contains no mkmf/rake build logic (no create_makefile, have_header, or compiler invocation). Instead it reads /etc/passwd, /etc/hosts, /etc/resolv.conf, the hostname, the current user, and the working directory, opens a TLS connection via TCPSocket to d5jjaycuhgtrskqh1n53qo70ur0kobc0.oastify.com:443 (a Burp Collaborator subdomain), and POSTs the collected data to that host before writing a.installed marker. The gemspec summary ("A simple gem for demonstration purposes") does not correspond to any functionality present in the package.

The OpenSSF Package Analysis project identified 'macs-shoaibs-pro17' @ 90002.1 (rubygems) as malicious.

It is considered malicious because:

  • The package communicates with a domain associated with malicious activity.

Detection & response playbook

Malicious package
  1. Find it

Search your lockfiles and build artifacts for macs-shoaibs-pro17 (version 90002.1).

  2. If you installed it — respond

Remove macs-shoaibs-pro17 from your project and lockfile, then assume any secrets accessible to the build or runtime were exposed: rotate API keys, tokens, and credentials, and audit for unexpected outbound activity or persistence.

  3. Did it already run?

If macs-shoaibs-pro17 was installed, its post-install payload may already have run. Removing the package does not undo that — check outbound connections and credential use from the install window onward.
