What this malware does

zystcdemo presents itself as a simple date formatting utility and runs its postinstall payload on npm install with node postinstall.js. The payload collects the whoami result, hostname, platform, and current time, then sends them in a POST request to https://srctest.zystcc.cn/collect; npm account zyst published it on 2026-10-29 (UTC).

Detection & response playbook

Malicious package
  1. Find it

Search your lockfiles and build artifacts for zystcdemo (version 1.0.0).

  2. If you installed it — respond

Remove zystcdemo from your project and lockfile, then assume any secrets accessible to the build or runtime were exposed: rotate API keys, tokens, and credentials, and audit for unexpected outbound activity or persistence.

  3. Did it already run?

If zystcdemo was installed, its post-install payload may already have run. Removing the package does not undo that — check outbound connections and credential use from the install window onward.
