What this malware does

wisewwasd is a dependency-confusion package (versions up to 99.0.1) from the same campaign as troubleshooting (MAL-2026-17641): a postinstall script runs beacon.cjs, which POSTs the installing host's name, install path and working directory to a hard-coded collector, and index.js, byte-identical to the troubleshooting payload (sha256 a86a4da763bbb34c16f361abe7aab66d5df591b66867ac8160041f932159b08d), does the same when imported.

Detection & response playbook

Backdoor / remote access
  1. Find it

Search your lockfiles and build artifacts for wisewwasd (version 1.0.1).

  2. If you installed it — respond

wisewwasd establishes remote access, so treat any host that installed it as fully compromised. Isolate the machine, remove the package, rotate all credentials it could reach, and rebuild from a trusted image rather than cleaning in place — a backdoor may have planted additional persistence.

  3. Did it already run?

If wisewwasd was installed, its post-install payload may already have run. Removing the package does not undo that — check outbound connections and credential use from the install window onward.
