What this malware does

solidity-gas-watcher ships index.js and lib/config.js, byte-identical to the hardhat-roof and chai-foundry payloads: a pino copy whose entry point loads an obfuscated dropper. It is a new name for the hardhat-roof (MAL-2026-17509) and chai-foundry (MAL-2026-13356) campaign; the file hashes below match that record's evidence. The package presents itself as an ordinary utility, so the code runs on import or install without the user knowing.

Detection & response playbook

Malicious package
  1. Find it

Search your lockfiles and build artifacts for solidity-gas-watcher (version 2.21.0).

  2. If you installed it — respond

Remove solidity-gas-watcher from your project and lockfile, then assume any secrets accessible to the build or runtime were exposed: rotate API keys, tokens, and credentials, and audit for unexpected outbound activity or persistence.

  3. Did it already run?

If solidity-gas-watcher was installed, its post-install payload may already have run. Removing the package does not undo that — check outbound connections and credential use from the install window onward.
