What this malware does

The package's package.json declares a preinstall lifecycle script that runs automatically on npm install. The script performs an nslookup of $(hostname).hzbvy3cmgred066nig6n3ux0y.canarytokens.com and a curl GET to http://hzbvy3cmgred066nig6n3ux0y.canarytokens.com/$(hostname), causing the installer's hostname to be transmitted to a third-party canarytokens.com subdomain via DNS and plaintext HTTP without consent. The package name mimics the popular react-dropzone library and uses an inflated version number (99.0.0) characteristic of dependency-confusion attacks that aim to win resolution against an internal package of the same name. The package provides no legitimate functionality; its only install-time effect is the out-of-band beacon identifying hosts that resolved and installed it.

The OpenSSF Package Analysis project identified 'react-dropzone-v4' @ 99.0.0 (npm) as malicious.

It is considered malicious because:

  • The package communicates with a domain associated with malicious activity.

Detection & response playbook

Credential / info stealer
  1. Find it

Search your lockfiles and build artifacts for react-dropzone-v4 (version 99.0.0).

  2. If you installed it — respond

react-dropzone-v4 is built to steal secrets, so assume every credential the build or runtime could read is compromised. Remove it from your project and lockfile, then rotate ALL exposed secrets — npm/registry tokens, cloud keys, CI/CD secrets, SSH keys, and any .env values — from a known-clean machine. Audit logs for unauthorized use of those credentials.

  3. Did it already run?

If react-dropzone-v4 was installed, its post-install payload may already have run. Removing the package does not undo that — check outbound connections and credential use from the install window onward.

Detect & block this

O3 blocks react-dropzone-v4-class packages before install and in CI — and if it already ran, its runtime egress monitoring catches the credential exfiltration and severs the channel.
