Immediate action
Remove the package, then rotate any secrets the build/runtime could reach.
npm uninstall mapkit-loader

What this malware does

Unscoped npm package 'mapkit-loader' impersonates the scoped '@apple/mapkit-loader' to intercept mistyped npx mapkit-loader invocations. The package.json self-describes as a 'PoC' targeting that confusion. On npm install, the postinstall lifecycle script (postinstall.js) unconditionally issues an HTTPS POST to a hardcoded third-party endpoint at npx-monitor-76056.azurewebsites.net/api/pingback carrying a persistent UUID, package version, trigger source ('npm-postinstall'), and timestamp. The UUID is written to ~/.cache/.mapkit-loader-id so subsequent executions (including the bin entry) can be correlated back to the same host. No credential or filesystem exfiltration is present, but the combination of name-confusion targeting an official Apple scope plus install-time beaconing to an author-controlled endpoint is a supply-chain typosquat with an operational tracking channel.

Detection & response playbook

Credential / info stealer
  1. Find it

Search your lockfiles and build artifacts for mapkit-loader (version 1.0.0).

  2. If you installed it — respond

mapkit-loader is built to steal secrets, so assume every credential the build or runtime could read is compromised. Remove it from your project and lockfile, then rotate ALL exposed secrets — npm/registry tokens, cloud keys, CI/CD secrets, SSH keys, and any .env values — from a known-clean machine. Audit logs for unauthorized use of those credentials.

  3. Did it already run?

If mapkit-loader was installed, its post-install payload may already have run. Removing the package does not undo that — check outbound connections and credential use from the install window onward.

Frequently asked questions

Detect & block this

O3 blocks mapkit-loader-class packages before install and in CI — and if it already ran, its runtime egress monitoring catches the credential exfiltration and severs the channel.
