What this malware does

On require() of this package, index.js loads bootstrap.js which downloads a platform-specific executable over HTTPS from a rotating list of attacker-controlled Cloudflare Workers subdomains (oob-worker.cf99-9b3.workers.dev, oob-worker.cf101-adf.workers.dev, oob-worker.cf102-baf.workers.dev, oob-worker.cf103-070.workers.dev), writes it to a temp path with a disguised name (dotnet_diag<hex>.exe on Windows,.cache_<hex> on POSIX), chmods it to 0755, and spawns it detached via cmd.exe /c start or /bin/sh -c. Destination hostnames are reassembled at runtime via array split +.join("") to evade static analysis, and child_process is required as require("child_"+"process"). If the HTTPS mirrors fail, bootstrap.js falls back to a DNS-TXT covert channel under *.dl.wel1.ru (sdk./ext./pkg./net.dl.wel1.ru): it queries a count record and N sequential TXT records, base64-decodes and concatenates them into an executable buffer, then writes and spawns it with no signature or hash verification. Cover-story naming (analytics_state marker, dotnet_diag*.exe, DISABLE_TELEMETRY/DO_NOT_TRACK env opt-outs) does not alter that this is arbitrary remote code execution on the installer's host on module load.

Detection & response playbook

Malicious package
  1. Find it

Scan your lockfiles (package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, yarn.lock, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, etc.) and build artifacts for bnpl-blocks-stories-of-block (version 35.8.1). O3 Security's supply-chain scanner checks every dependency against known-malicious package intelligence at install time and in CI, flagging bnpl-blocks-stories-of-block across your stack and pipelines.

  2. If you installed it — respond

Remove bnpl-blocks-stories-of-block from your project and lockfile, then assume any secrets accessible to the build or runtime were exposed: rotate API keys, tokens, and credentials, and audit for unexpected outbound activity or persistence.

  3. Did it already run?

If bnpl-blocks-stories-of-block was ever installed, its post-install/runtime payload may have already executed. O3's L7 egress monitoring and runtime eBPF sensors detect the credential exfiltration or command-and-control callback after install and block the malicious outbound channel, so you catch and contain the actual compromise — not just the presence of the package.

  4. How O3 protects you

O3 blocks bnpl-blocks-stories-of-block before install through its supply-chain scanner, and if it has already run, detects and severs the exfiltration or C2 callback at runtime through L7 egress monitoring and eBPF.
